Michael Mueller What a mournful, beautiful, life-affirming album this is. It sounds lost, yet hopeful in equal measure.

Arbirk's voice is a amazing; vulnerable, fragile, but deceptively powerful. He sings with no trace of vanity whatsoever; and the intimacy he evokes as a result is profound. True artistry.

The whole album feels like a sad, wistful cabaret, played to an empty theatre, recorded almost by chance, and from some distance away.

This album has been criminally overlooked. Give it a listen. Favorite track: Safe In My Arms.

1.
Don’t be afraid of darkness, I will carry you home tonight. We will make the blackest sky brighter, and light up the stars. Because you, you are safe in my arms. You, you are safe in my arms. You, you are safe in my arms, tonight. So sleep and dream of kindness, I will stay awake on guard. So the danger that hides in shadows, can’t reach your heart. Because you, you are safe in my arms. You, you are safe in my arms. You, you are safe in my arms, tonight.

Beneath 04:42
The rain was falling down on you, and the smell was warm you wanted to, stay out and play in the summer rain. Pocket pictures pulled apart, like a dream torned up inside your heart. Tears pouring out, like summer rain. Sitting inside, stuck within you’re paralyzed. Locked from inside, thoughts within your parents minds. Walking barefoot in the breeze while your favourite dress hides beneath, the coat your parents made you wear. Now you’re scared beneath the cherry tree ‘cause you ran away today it seems as if it didn’t make any sense. Sitting inside, stuck within you’re paralyzed. Locked from inside thoughts within your parents mind.
3.
If you’re hurt so bad but you hide it, let me carry your pain for a while and - when you escape out it to the darkness, let me bring you back with a smile but... I’m at the wrong place at the wrong time. I want to get up and get out to my Panther Anthem, My Panther Anthem. It’s an ode to dancing and for second chances. To my heart I will try to describe it, we’ll have to be cold and hard to survive this. I should have known you were always decided, but my hope for love was coliding with. I’m at the wrong place, at the wrong time. I want to get up and get out to my Panther Anthem, My Panther Anthem. It’s an ode to dancing and for second chances. Now the heartless answer, feels like a cure for cancer. So to my graceful dancer is my Panther Anthem.
4.
If you regret to live for a single day, will you remember then our great escape. When life began you smiled again, you had a child got married and, we’re not supposed to live alone that long, though only wounds will shape the bravest sons. We’ll have to figure out where we belong. Would you be sad to learn what we’ve become? But we’re still not done and though the hills will seem much higher. We’re still not done, we’re the young and hopeful fighters of love. You are the rock our lives are build upon, with the kindest heart to save us from, all the things that we’ve done wrong, we might be hurting you but not for long. ‘Cause we’re still not done and though the hills will seem much higher. We’re still not done we’re the young and hopeful fighters of love.
5.
I’m still sorry for that day. It hurt you cried and ran away. Somethings are blurred and scarred. I’m forever haunted by the screams, in my dreams or without sleep. When was I still alive? But tonight we’ll drink and talk about the stars. We’re forgetting all that was. And let’s try to keep some kind of honesty, and hope the past will let us be. Let’s drag a knife across our dreams, keep them open let them breathe, our mistakes will wash away. I hope our love will still remain, in our hearts and through our veins. You’ll always be, here with me. So tonight we’ll drink and talk about the stars, we’re forgetting all that was. And let’s try to keep some kind of honesty, hope the past will let us be free.

Disguises 02:37
There is something in your eyes, some kind of a surprising glance. Is it one of your disguises? What is it you are keeping in? Till it’s gone, it’s gone in time. I’ll fill all of the blank pages, with songs about a long lost past. There’s a moment I keep chasing, a moment I will try to grasp. Till it’s gone, it’s gone in time.
7.
Home again, with a foreign friend. Breathe it in ans breathe it out still warmer. Fear the cold, but keep it in. Try to leave the past beneath the ground. Memories of my favourite lake. We told our tales to the silence of the night. Light up, my defeat. Try to stop it, but keep repeating. Those summer nights, and those kind green eyes. I wish we were so young and close once more. But I’m tired, so tired now. It’s been so long where all I see is grey. So light up all of my mistakes, break it off and leave me forsaken. Light up my defeat. With those summer nights, those kind green eyes. Despite the pain, I would do it all again.
8.
You say “let’s keep this simple and practical, with none of those feelings irrational”. But love is contradictable, it is pain so pure and beautiful. To be naked in the freezing wind, and to endure all suffering. But you don’t know, how could you know. I could never let you go. So you say “you’re a fool for trusting me”. But that you don’t care, and we’ll never be. So love is unreliable, it is sickness, death and violence. To keep walking with a broken ankle through endless fire, burning mantle. Still you don’t know, how could you know. I could never let you go. And I will lift you higher, higher, higher where - love is hope beyond compare. Love is in despair. I say “love is inexplicable, though still important to be told of”. So beat me up, take everything, break every bone and forever think. That our child could never be, one of yours or reality. Though you don’t know, how could you know. My love for you would always grow. And forever lift you higher, higher, higher where - love is hope beyond compare.

Queen Louisa 03:55
I wan’t to drive out to your grave, to hide from all the places. I wan’t to only see your face. To be in a state of gratefulness. And it feels like I’ve been here before, ‘cause I know this so well. And you, cannot hurt me no more. My heart has mended the pain. Still everything will end, on the bridge of Queen Louisa. Out here the leaves are brighter green, and you’re as clear as in a fever. Somehow your arms are surrounding me, once more I feel your heart repeatingly, saying: “It feels like you’ve been here before, ‘cause I know you so well. And you will feel no sorrow at all, no one is measured by pain”. Now everything begins on the bridge of Queen Louisa.
10.
Always dreamed of running, thought that I was hunting life. But I was in a forrest cold and dark as night. Seeking kind of trouble, leading boring double lives, but I will cease to stumble because I’m far behind you. Wake up, wake up the wolf. Now the fall is coming, with no more leaves to hide behind. But I will be a fortress keeping safe inside from you. It’s time to release the wolf.

about

Arbirk is set to release their debut album Disguises, which is a big-laden and ambitious concept album that invites the listener on a journey through the darkest and most beautiful parts of the mind.

The musical mastermind behind Arbirk is singer and songwriter Rasmus Arbirk Larsen, who will just turn 30 before the debut album comes out. He was born in Odense, grew up in picturesque North Funen, graduated in Nyborg and is now living in Copenhagen after a stay in a Benedictine monastery in Inverness, Scotland.

The album can be understood and experienced in many ways. Completely aware and intentional, several different stories, metaphors and themes are being waved in and out of each other throughout the whole album.

After falling asleep, our main character moves through a dream and nightmare world, where at first the past is being examined. Initially it is almost therapeutic and constructive, but during the course of the album/night it becomes more and more incoherent and violent. Along the way our main character loses sight of her/himself and can no longer recognize what he/she has become. It all ends on Bridge Queen Louisa where a longing for what might be on the other side of death causes our narrator to throw him/herself into death. Only to wake up from dreaming, now completely aware that something needs to be fixed.

Pressquotes:
”This is music that affects your very heart & soul”
– Charlie Ashcroft, Amazing Radio

”This is really really good. It’s very original and with a very trendy sound”
- Jesper Borup, DR P4Fyn (DK)

”Arbirk's musicianship & vocal arrangements have both portrayed & captured a delicious, dreariness that I think makes this great number/band stand head & shoulders above the vast majority of the competition out there! ... I simply love Arbirk!”
- The Count, WayOut Radio (UK)
